Successful intubation requires:

• Good mouth opening
• Extension of the upper cervical spine
• The ability to move soft tissue within the mandible out of the way

Always study previous anaesthetic records although a previous easy intubation is no guarantee against difficulty, a previous difficult intubation should alert you to probable difficulty.
