When taking a full blood count/WHO Hb colour scale:
- When should you measure?
- Which patients should you test?
Near patient monitors such as Haemocue can be useful. Higher than normal Hb levels may indicate dehydration or severe lung disease.

Measuring full blood count
When
Measure when:
- The history or examination indicates anaemia
- The proposed operation is expected to cause substantial blood loss
Which patients?
Measure in patients with:
- Jaundice
- Malignancy
- Infection
- HIV
- Significant blood loss
Also measure in patients with cardiac/renal/respiratory disease.
