There are four checks to make before inserting the cLMA:

1. Visual inspection

Check for external damage to the device. Then look through the airway tube to ensure it is patent and there are no foreign bodies (which would lead to obstruction).

2. Deflation – inflation check

3. Flex the airway tube

4. Connector

Fig 1 Visual inspection of cLMA

There are four checks to make before inserting the cLMA:

1. Visual inspection

2. Deflation – inflation check

Fully deflate the cLMA. If the cuff re-inflates this indicates a leak or pilot valve failure.

Inflate the device to 150% of the maximum cuff volume. It should remain inflated and there should be no herniations of the cuff or pilot balloon.

3. Flex the airway tube

4. Connector

There are four checks to make before inserting the cLMA:

1. Visual inspection

2. Deflation – inflation check

3. Flex the airway tube

Flex the airway tube to 180°. It should not kink.

4. Connector

Fig 3 Flex airway tube

There are four checks to make before inserting the cLMA:

1. Visual inspection

2. Deflation – inflation check

3. Flex the airway tube

4. Connector

The connector should be well seated and not detach when a reasonable axial force is applied.
