For anaesthetizing a patient, an induction agent that reduces airway reflexes, e.g. propofol, is more suitable than one that may enhance them, e.g. thiopental.

The ease of insertion of a cLMA will be improved by the addition of one of the following agents 3 mins prior to insertion:

• An opioid with rapid onset, e.g. alfentanil or fentanyl
• Nitrous oxide
• Lidocaine (up to 1.5 mg/kg IV)

To assess adequacy of anaesthesia, the patient should:

• Be unresponsive
• Have a relaxed jaw
• Not respond to jaw thrust
