Step 3: Lift the Epiglottis

The epiglottis should now be visible. Use a moderate lifting force applied along the line of the laryngoscope handle to lift the epiglottis and reveal the glottis. While doing this it is essential to maintain displacement of the tongue, mouth opening and head and neck position. Make sure you do not contact, or worse, lever on, the maxillary teeth.

Laryngoscopic technique requires extension of the shoulder and elbow joint of the intubator. There is hardly any wrist movement at all. Think tennis, not squash.
