Question: How would you instruct your patient to take a ‘vital capacity breath’?
Answer: Your patient needs to eliminate their expiratory reserve volume before taking a maximum inhalation.
Try: ‘Breathe out as deeply as you can, emptying your lungs completely and then breathe in filling your lungs as much as you can. Hold your breath as long as possible.’
It is advisable to do a practice with the patient using 100 % oxygen, so they can perfect the technique before the real thing.
