These are quick ways to assess 'disability':

• Conscious state using AVPU (Alert, Voice, Pain, Unresponsive)
• Posture
• Pupil size and reactivity

AVPU is the simplest efficient way to record conscious level; it is recommended in ETAT+ and APLS:

• A awake
• V response to voice (mother's best)
• P responds only to pain but appropriately, e.g. moves arm to central pain stimulus
• U unresponsive

A response below A is serious.

A response below V usually equates to a GCS of <=8.
