hCG is a peptide hormone produced by the embryo and later by the placenta. Its role is to maintain the corpus luteum and hence to maintain progesterone production.

Progesterone is vital to the maintenance of pregnancy. It is also possible that hCG has a role in the altered immune system in pregnancy.
