Effective teamwork is essential.

Discuss the patient with the surgeon, midwives and theatre team.

Ascertain the degree of urgency immediately and the indication for surgery.

The mother is your first priority - don't be afraid to speak up for her.

Resuscitate the mother on the way to theatre if required by:

• Giving oxygen
• Full left lateral tilt to reduce aortocaval compression
• Treat hypotension with vasopressors, e.g. ephedrine or adrenaline and fluid
