If time allows, request a full blood count and group and save.
In emergency cases, the procedure should not be delayed while awaiting test results when no abnormalities are expected.
In patients with preeclampsia, a platelet count within the last 4 hours is required before proceeding with spinal/epidural. Urea and electrolytes and a clotting screen are also useful in patients with preeclampsia.
In patients with low platelets (not associated with pre-eclampsia), a platelet count within the last 12 hours should be available.
