A spinal anaesthetic involves the injection of a small volume of local anaesthetic into cerebrospinal fluid (lumbar puncture).

It causes conduction block in all sensory and motor nerves up to T4 dermatome for ~2hours, allowing surgery to be performed, with good conditions, below the waist.
