Oxygen concentration monitoring should be performed as close to the patient as possible.

An inadequate FiO₂ may be due to:

• Inadequate fresh gas flow – Very low fresh gas flows with a circle system can lead to a fall in FiO₂ if the fresh gas ratio is not adjusted to compensate
• Oxygen supply problems – Modern anaesthetic machines will discontinue flow of all gases if the oxygen supply fails
