Verbal Handover

Before starting the handover, check that the recovery staff are ready to receive the information. The anaesthetist should speak alone, uninterrupted, providing the relevant information about the case. You may want to refer to your anaesthetic chart, medical notes, or a specific aide-memoir for a handover.

There should be an opportunity to ask questions and to clarify any points. At the end, the recovery team should be satisfied about the handover and happy to take over the care of the patient. There should be a confirmation from the recovery team of the plans for the patient.

Only when the above steps have been taken should the anaesthetist delegate responsibility to the recovery team and resume the operating list.

The recovery team should be told how to get in touch with the anaesthetist, or a responsible colleague, in case any problems arise.
