A. True. Being unable to move legs against resistance is a common effect of a lumbar or low thoracic epidural analgesia. The ward staff will need to be informed but this is not a reason for delaying discharge.
B. True. A post-operative patient may be drowsy, but as long as his or her airway is protected and he or she is not excessively sedated (i.e. is responsive to voice), he or she can be discharged.
C. False. If a patient tolerates an oropharyngeal airway, his or her airway reflexes are clearly obtunded, so he or she must not be discharged to the ward.
D. False. A patient with low urine output will need to be reviewed urgently and treated accordingly. He or she must not be discharged until the problem is dealt with.
E. True. A patient who is on parenteral morphine may be drowsy, and may benefit from supplemental oxygen, but may safely be discharged if there is no hypoxia.
