The room used for the HDU should:

• Be large enough to allow free movement of staff around each bed
• Be well ventilated, with heating and air conditioning if required
• Be well lit, with bedside lights and torches for power cuts
• Include a separate equipment storage area and a separate sluice
• Have a reliable power supply and piped oxygen if possible

If setting up a new HDU, clean thoroughly and paint the room.
