Question: What features of equipment make it suitable for use in developing countries?

Answer: Equipment should be robust, simple to use and easy to maintain.

Spare parts should be available and affordable.

If buying new equipment, there are examples with specifications in the International Federation of the Red Cross online equipment catalogue. A link to this catalogue can be found in the Resources icon.

If possible, use equipment specifically designed for your environment, for example Diamedica produce equipment for limited resource settings such as the Glostavent anaesthetic machine.

If the mains voltage is subject to spikes or if using a generator, electrical equipment will require a voltage regulator.

If the electricity supply is unreliable, ensure alternatives are available - at least: oxygen cylinders, torches and pulse oximeters with enough batteries.
