A sharps container or bin should be:

• Single use - for storage of used sharps and their disposal
• Easy to see, recognise and use
• Puncture resistant
• Impermeable to liquid
• Opaque - avoid using clear plastic or glass as if the container is discarded, others may be looking for the contents
• Able to be closed
• With an opening in the lid that is large enough for items to be easily dropped through it, but small enough that nothing can be removed from inside
