Tips For Sharps Containers

Things to do:

  • Mark them clearly so that people will not unknowingly use them as a garbage container
  • Mark the fill line at the three quarters full level
  • Put sharps containers as close to the point of use as possible and practical, ideally within arm's reach
  • Place them at a convenient height - attach them to walls or other surfaces if at all possible

Things not to do:

  • Don't overfill
  • Don't put your hand inside to reach something or press something down
  • Don't shake to settle the contents (things may fall out)
  • Don't place containers in the middle of the floor or in a corridor where they are more likely to be knocked over or easily reached by a child
