Nicotinic receptors are transmembrane channels that open to allow Na+ ions to flow through in response to activation by ACh. This is an example of a ligand-gated ion channel (Fig 1).

Muscarinic receptors are predominantly found at parasympathetic postganglionic junctions and work instead by G-protein linkage.

Question: Where do nicotinic receptors exist in the body?

Question: Where do nicotinic receptors exist in the body?

Answer: Nicotinic receptors exist throughout the body in:

  • All autonomic ganglia
  • The adrenal medulla
  • The neuromuscular junction
